As the Eagle, Flies the King sequel

To those who have read As the Eagle Flies the King, and were looking to a second book, I apologise that, due to some misreading of the story by those who have misinterpreted the cover, a second book will not be forthcoming.  I will also not be considering a screen play for the same reason. I have done with the era in history, but for those who are interested in reading in the era, I highly recommend www.sacred-texts.com and www.gutenberg.org. These sites allow you to download original versions of ancient works. I was able to study here a copy of The Histories by Herodotus, a comprehensive work covering all the cultures of the ancient near east during the period of the Babylonian exile.  There are programs available on most computers that allow you to convert these works into speech, making it much easier to plow through large tomes.

This will be my last blog.

Happy reading!

Wendy

A Book to Change a Generation

For Young Women Only

Every now and again a book comes along that could make a really positive societal change. For Young Women Only: what you need to know about how guys think  http://www.amazon.com/Young-Women-Only-About-Think/dp/1590526503  by Shaunti Feldhahn is such a book. An easy read, this is a candid look at male attitudes to young women. Research questions asked of a cross section of young men reveal how they see young girls’ clothing , what they think about body image, and what a young woman can do to keep her sense of dignity amongst the pressure to wear inappropriate fashion.  This is a must read for every thirteen-year-old girl.

The Time of Your Life

img_2142cThe singer songwriter producer with the 2008 number one hit Time of Your Life—which became an American Idol winner—has signed a combined book and record deal with Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group.

The book, scheduled for release in 2010, tells the life changing decision Regie Hamm made to adopt an orphaned Chinese girl. Regie’s song was the winning entry in American Idol’s seventh season.

“You can’t see the circle while you’re making it,” says Regie. “Only special moments can allow you to see all of it. China…babies…songs…music…dreams…success…happiness. They all mean different things to me because of what I have been through. Any plan I would have developed could not have been as beautiful and unexpected. This one was divine.” From Tate Publishing Newsletter, Quarter 4, 2009.

A Bridge of Life–a Book

A Bridge of Life—a Book

For thirty-two years her depression and grief had nearly swept me away. For thirty-two years I had so wanted to introduce her to words of comfort—words that would truly last her a lifetime.  Then, unexpectedly, in her dying hours, a book fell into my hands that acted like a bridge.

Handprints-Front-CoverWhen I introduced my mother-in-law to the scriptures for the first and last time, it was easier than I had ever envisioned. Thanks to a book by Peter Nicholls—Handprints of the Creator (http://www.peternicholls.com.au/handprints.htm). With this book, I was able to ease her life-threatening pain for a precious half hour, as the scriptures and pictures took us to places far beyond the confines of her palliative  bed. The pictures tapped into a lifetime of glimpses into places she had met me—scenes reminiscent of one happy memory after another. Thank you, Peter, for making the hardest painful hours of Naida’s life just a little bit brighter. This book is truly a bridge for troubled waters.

The real price of GOLD

jewelleryfairtrade5.4 million people have died mining gold since 1998. The killers own the gold mines of the Congo. Workers can spend up to six days underground at a time collecting the gold rocks. They are being poisoned by mercury as they process the gold. That gold is sold in western shops as jewellery. In refugee camps eight out of ten women have been raped. For every one killed in combat about 70 others die from preventable diseases because of it. One of the richest countries in the world for resources, but the Congo is cursed by its lust for gold. *
Here is some jewellery that will bring fair trade to those who need it…

Lost for gold

In Belshazzar’s Feast, playing in Sydney recently, there is a hymn to the ‘god of gold.’ King Belshazzar lost the greatest empire in the ancient world while supping at a feast on stolen gold from Solomon’s Temple. Worship of gold proved to be his undoing. The previously impenetrable walls of Babylon were –according to Heroditus the historian–56 miles in length, 80 ft thick and 320 ft high. There were fortresses and temples actually within the walls and room for a chariot to turn around. Yet he lost it all, for the sake of gold. If you miss Walton’s renowned opera, read the account in my story As the Eagle, Flies the King, the first literary narrative to tackle the subject in English.

RECESSION TIP FOR WRITERS…

Stop worrying about your gold. Stop side-stepping what God has put you here to do. You will be blessed financially when you meet your true calling. It may be by way of unexpected discounts or windfalls. It may have nothing to do with your writing.

Expect the unexpected.

“The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, the work of man’s hands”. Proverbs 3:9.
